Our penultimate stop on the Schubert tour was Steyr, a two hour drive from Vienna (July 9 - 14). This was Schubert’s first stop with Vogl on their 1825 tour together. Vogl had grown up here and attended the school at the nearby
Kremsmünster Abbey.
We loved Steyr! Not only is it full of history related to Schubert and his friends, but it is also lovely and picturesque. The people here were friendly and welcoming. I had booked our stay at Hotel Mader right on the town square, knowing that Schubert had stayed next door with the family Schellmann.
We were surprised to find out that the home is actually attached to the hotel now and one can book rooms there. We were given a tour of the part of the house where Schubert stayed for many weeks in 1819, 1823 and 1825. Upon learning about our quest, the proprietor of the hotel, Mr. Hans Mader, connected us with Wolfgang Hack, a resident tour guide extradonaire and expert in the history of Steyr. Our four-hour private tour with him was amazing. We will definitely visit this lovely town again!
